Consolation Ministry

The Consolation Ministry plays a vital role in St. Philip's Parish Community. When a parishioner dies we are called to provide comfort, consolation, and hope to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one. Comfort and consolation are given with our presence, listening skills, and prayers. Hope is given as we help the family select readings and music, and by encouraging participation in the funeral mass. We do this by instilling the hope that comes from our faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus. As lay persons we are the resource and representatives of our Church in this difficult time.

Another part of our ministry involves volunteers who act as greeters at the funeral mass. They help prepare our banner and the altar, greet the guests at the Mass, and hand out the funeral booklet that has been prepared for the family by the Consolation Minister.

We also have many volunteers who are cake bakers. This is an important part of our ministry as it helps to encourage a sense of community within our parish, especially by reaching out to those in grief. A baked good is delivered to the family at home or at the wake.

And finally, a note is sent to the bereaved family a month after the death of their loved one, letting them know that St. Philip's Parish is continuing to pray for them. A card with bereavement information is included with the note.

We are responsible for the celebration of the All Soul's Mass in November. All parishioners who have experienced a death of a loved one within the year are invited to participate.

CONTACTS: Carol Arote, 261-2485 x110 and Zita Riley (757-1706).
